Difficult to drive? Not compared to the F40 and even the Viper. The power delivery, solidity of the body, and the massive downforce make the car much easier to drive than either (this from a man, Paige Stevens, who owns an F40, F50, and several Vipers).
Expensive to maintain? Only if you drive it into a telephone pole. Paige's F50 had over 20,000mi on road and track and had not yet had any unscheduled service.
The F50 is extremely awesome, the 996 Turbo is awesome.
