"Update--Cracked Block!
Well, I ventured out to Bav Solutions shop in the Bronx today to check on my engine at Dave Vilanova's invitation. Unfortunately, when I arrived, they broke the bad news to me: Although no cracks showed up during magnafluxing of the block, when they re-decked the block, four cracks appeared, not in the sleeves, but in the wall behind the sleeves, running from the edge of the sleeve back to the water jacket. Dave already has ordered eight brand new sleeves, which will arrive Friday or Monday, but we need another block. If we cannot find an acceptable one locally, Dave is going to drive down to Adam's garage and fetch my old engine to use the block and pay me the going rate for a used block (Any ideas on what to charge?). Everything else--pistons, cams, rods, heads, etc.--are done, but obviously, we can't put the thing together without a sleeved and machined block. As a result, the engine will not be back together for about three weeks. No Christmas present for Peter.
While I'm disappointed, I'm pleased that after everything, Dave still had the guts to tell me about this in person and fix it (again, on an expedited basis and at substantial cost to him). I met Ramone, the engine builder, today, and Ramone clearly takes a lot of pride in his work. My block apparently will now serve as a nice coffee table for a gearhead, probably Dave.
Onward and upward.
