"If you're a BMW M fan, German print magazine Autobild has put together the mother of all comparisons. Autobild has taken all current BMW M models and set them all against each other on the Sachsenring in Germany. Called "Fascination M" the comparo reconfirms the obvious while uncovering a few surprises.
Starting with the obvious, the M3 CRT (E90) is the fastest M Car Autobild has ever tested on the Sachsenring. But vaguely surprising was that the new M5 (F10) in all of its heft was only three hundredths of a second slower, but two seconds faster than the 1M coupe (E82) in third place.
In a surprising fourth place is the M3 coupe (E92) which beat out the M3 sedan (E90) by one tenth of a second.
The M3 convertible (E93) was just over two seconds slower than the sedan while the X6M and X5M (E70) were only one tenth apart. However, in another surprising twist, both SAVs outperformed the previous generation M5 (E60) - yes, by a fraction of a second but nonetheless, they were faster.
Check out the times in the chart below. It should be noted that the M3 GTS (E92) which tops them all is not counted because it is no longer available.
For further comparison, Autobild included times for the Porsche Panamera Turbo S and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG with performance package.
